I think God has been teaching me something about prayer–it is meant to be earnest.  One of the basic essences of prayer is the cry for HELP!  I have realized recently that I am very slow to earnestly cry to God for help.  In various ways, he has shown me my absolute inability to do life without him.  Therefore, in the moment of an argument, the moment of temptation, or the moment of difficulty, I want my first and strong emotion to be a heartfelt cry for HELP!!!

“To be spriritually minded is…to have our minds really exercised with delight about heavenly things…especially Christ himself as at the right hand of God.”

“Spiritual-mindedness is developed, exercised and reinforced by meditation. By…meditation, I intend the thought of some subject spiritual and divine, with the fixing, forcing, and ordering of our thoughts about it, with a design to affect our own hearts and souls with the matter of it…In meditation our principal aim is the affecting of our own hearts and minds with love, delight, and humiliation.”

I recently started reading the Confessions of St. Augustine. This quote form the first chapter is worth the book:

What art Thou then, my God? what, but the Lord God? For who is Lord but the Lord? or who is God save our God? Most highest, most good, most potent, most omnipotent; most merciful, yet most just; most hidden, yet most present; most beautiful, yet most strong, stable, yet incomprehensible; unchangeable, yet all-changing; never new, never old; all-renewing, and bringing age upon the proud, and they know it not; ever working, ever at rest; still gathering, yet nothing lacking; supporting, filling, and overspreading; creating, nourishing, and maturing; seeking, yet having all things. Thou lovest, without passion; art jealous, without anxiety; repentest, yet grievest not; art angry, yet serene; changest Thy works, Thy purpose unchanged; receivest again what Thou findest, yet didst never lose; never in need, yet rejoicing in gains; never covetous, yet exacting usury. Thou receivest over and above, that Thou mayest owe; and who hath aught that is not Thine? Thou payest debts, owing nothing; remittest debts, losing nothing. And what had I now said, my God, my life, my holy joy? or what saith any man when he speaks of Thee? Yet woe to him that speaketh not, since mute are even the most eloquent.

Where is this deep, full, expansive, understanding worship of our amazing God today? Thank you God for Augustine’s confessions.
